Leelawadee, Panan, M Marine ad Koh Mak Ferry. All operate Speedboats to Koh Mak

Speedboats operated by four companies run daily services to Koh Mak throughout the year between Krom Luang Chumphon pier, Laem Ngop and piers on Koh Mak.  During the low season, from 1 June – 1 November services are reduced.  The actual schedules are not usually released a long time in advance.  But boat companies usually run one, instead of two, services per day.

In March 2023, Seatales was renamed Koh Mak Ferry. The boat used is still a speedboat, not an actual ferry, despite the name.

The ticket prices are the same for all speedboat services.  However tickets from one boat company cannot be used for a boat from another company.

Reservations aren’t essential for most of the year.  But if you are travelling at peak times, for example, New Year, Thai New Year or long weekend public holidays it is better to book in advance.

Timetables are dependent on the weather.  If there is bad weather or unexpected high winds it may not be possible for speedboats to go out at sea.

Koh Mak Ferry

Location of Krom Luang Chumpon pier and piers on Koh Mak

From Bangkok to Laem Ngop

The easiest and cheapest method is to take the government bus 999 from Ekkamai Bus station, Bangkok to Laem Ngop.  There are two departures daily throughout the year at 0745 and 0900 . ( NOTE: As of October 2022 there is only one service at 07:45 ) Ticket price is 292 Baht.  The buses are all new and in excellent condition.

If you are coming form the airport or prefer to be picked up from your hotel it is also possible to arrange a private transfer by car or minibus.  This can be done online through several websites. For example  : https://iamkohchang.com/getting-here/car-minibus-transfers.html

Leelawadee Speedboat

From Trat Airport to Laem Ngop

If you are arriving on Bangkok Airways flight PG301 or PG305 to Trat then it is easy to get to Koh Mak the same day.  Simply take the airport minibus service to Krom Luang pier.  The ticket price is 500 Baht per person.  (Excluding boat ticket.)  Then buy your tickets for one of the speedboats to Koh Mak at the pier.

Minibus tickets can bought upon landing at the airport.  More information here: https://tratairportguide.com/transport-to-koh-chang/

However, the minibuses don’t run in the opposite direction.  Fortunately, there are local pick up truck taxi services that provide a service from the pier to Trat Airport for 200 Baht per person.  This can’t be booked in advance.  You will find drivers waiting for passengers when you arrive at the pier.

It is possible to get from Koh Mak to Trat Airport in time for, PG302, the first flight of the day.  (Assuming there are no unexpected delays en-route.) But you will need to take the 08:00 speedboat off the island.  If you do this then you should be at the airport around 09:30.  Fortunately, Trat isn’t the sort of airport where you have to arrive two hours before departure.  However, it’s more sensible, and definitely less stressful, to book either PG306, PG308 or PG310 and allow yourself more time to get to the airport.

From Trat town to Laem Ngop

If you arrive by bus in Trat or are staying in Trat overnight, then it is easy to take one of the shared pick up truck taxis ‘songthaews’ from either the bus station or the main road in the centre of Trat to Krom Luang pier near Laem Ngop village.  The fare should be 50 – 60 Baht per person.

M Marine Speedboat

Boat Companies

The four boat companies that run speedboats to Koh Mak are all operated by families from Koh Mak.

Leelawadee Speedboat uses the Makathanee Resort pier, on the south west beach on Koh Mak.

Panan Speedboat is run by Koh Mak Resort and uses their pier on the northwest of the island.

Koh Mak Ferry and M Marine speedboats use the main pier on the east of the island at Ao Nid which is also where larger boats often moor.  Such as supply boats and the Koh Kut Express which runs from Laem Sok pier on the mainland to Koh Kood but also makes a stop on Koh Mak.

The Mak Resort also has a private speedboat service for guests which departs from Laem Sok pier.

From Laem Ngop pier to a hotel on Koh Mak

This video shows the whole trip from boarding the speedboat to Koh Mak in Laem Ngop, the journey and then taking the pick up truck taxi to a resort on the island. As you will see, it is easy to do.

The boats will be busier than normal due to the long weekend holiday. The best thing to do is ask your hotel to reserve tickets for a speedboat for you. There might be extra boats but no new timetable has been made public. It will probably depend on demand.

    Hi

Are the speedboats running regularly over New Year? And my second question is should we ask our hotel to book tickets in advance for us ?

Yes. speedboats are running hourly (normal schedules) over New year. Spaces are limited, so it’s better to book tickets in advance. Your hotel will be able to help you do this.

Also alllow plenty of time to get to the pier, as there’s a new covid19 checkpoint near Trat and so traffic jams can be quite long ( maybe a 1 hour wait )

We arrived tomorrow to Laem Nobp from Siem Reap. We will leave SR at 6am so hopefully we can make it on time for any of the ferrys. I don’t want to book in advance because not sure at what time we will arrive and I see that each time is for different companies. Would it be ok at this time of the year to book on the same day? We are 3 people in total. Also, do you know how much would it be a private taxi from Thai-Cambodian Border to Laem Nobp? Thanks!

The last boat to Koh Mak is at 16:00. So unfortunately you won’t be able to get to the island the same day.

You can either stay the night on the mainland or come to Koh Chang. Then next morning go to Koh Mak.

Hi Carlos. When you are on Koh Mak you can take a boat to Koh Kham from Koh Mak Resort. There isn’t a timetable for boats.

The only way to get there would be by private speedboat. Your resort on Koh Mak might be able to arrange it for you. Probably around 10 – 12,000 Baht.
