New Electric Hydrofoil Ferries Transform Island Travel
Thailand has taken a major step towards cleaner, smarter transport with the launch of electric hydrofoil ferries connecting the mainland to Koh Kood, one of the country’s most unspoiled islands. The initiative blends cutting-edge tech with eco-tourism values, offering faster, quieter and zero-emission travel.
A Greener Way to Reach Koh Kood
Until now, most travellers heading to Koh Kood relied on traditional diesel-powered boats. These are known for being noisy, fuel-hungry and tough on fragile marine life. That’s changing. A new fleet of Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ferries will operate between Trat province and Koh Kood, slashing both carbon emissions and travel time.
The roll-out comes from a partnership between Swedish clean-tech firm Candela and Thai operator Seudamgo (a subsidiary of Leopard Transportation Co., Ltd.) and represents one of Thailand’s boldest moves yet toward sustainable maritime travel.
What Makes These Ferries Special?
Candela’s hydrofoil technology allows each ferry to “fly” above the water using underwater wings, drastically reducing drag and energy use. The results are impressive:
- Zero emissions during operation and up to 80% less energy use than conventional fast boats
- Minimal wake and underwater noise, so kinder to coastal ecosystems and marine life
- Fast cruising speeds (25+ knots) for a ~20-nautical-mile crossing in about 40 minutes
On board, passengers get a comfortable air-conditioned cabin for around 20 – 30 travellers and a calmer ride. A real-time digital Flight Control system continuously adjusts the foils to reduce pitching and slamming, helping to prevent seasickness.

Technical Highlights
- Dual Candela C-Pod electric motors (approx. 110 kW continuous, 160 kW peak)
- 378 kWh battery system with DC fast charging (up to ~300 kW)
- Effective range of ~40 nautical miles at service speed
- Compatible with renewable charging (e.g., solar-sourced power), further lowering lifecycle emissions
Cleaner Seas, Happier Travellers
For visitors, the benefits go beyond comfort. Switching to electric ferries to Koh Kood helps protect one of Thailand’s most pristine destinations. Famed for coral reefs, mangroves and crystal-clear water. Quiet, clean crossings align perfectly with Koh Kood’s reputation as a sustainable, low-impact island paradise.
A Scalable Vision for Thailand’s Eco-Tourism
With more than 1,500 islands, Thailand is well placed to adopt clean electric transport on water. Bangkok already hosts Candela’s largest office outside Sweden, and the Koh Kood route is expected to become a model for other island destinations across the country and the wider region.
The Future of Koh Kood Travel
The introduction of a new fleet of electric hydrofoil ferries isn’t just about reaching Koh Kood faster. It’s about preserving what makes the island special. Clean air, clear water and quiet travel are set to become the norm.
Bottom line: The greenest way to reach Koh Kood is also becoming the best way.
